Hanna Joensuu will be the speaker at the Arts and Design Society's April Luncheon on Wednesday, May 25. Joensuu's background includes extensive work in photography, print making, and batik. Her talk will be on the latter, presenting an introduction to batik, or resist dyeing, the art of decorating cloth using a wax resist and dye. Batik is historically the most expressive and subtle of the resist methods and it became most deeply rooted in Indonesia, where it was a highly developed art by the 13th century and was used to enhance the appearance of fine garments. In the present day, the ever-widening range of techniques available offers artists the opportunity to explore a unique process in a flexible and exciting way. Her talk will cover the basic process, getting started, materials, equipment, and examples.
Joensuu will give her talk at the Art Center Gallery, 17 First Street, Fort Walton Beach. The Luncheon, which is open to the public, will begin at 11:30. Cost of the luncheon is $12. Reservations must be made no later than May 23; cost of luncheons for reservations after that date is $15. Please send reservations request to: adsorsvp@gmail.com or call Risa at 850-376-3901.
