This romantic ballet was first presented by Sergey Diaghilev during the historic first season of the Ballet Russes in Paris on June 2, 1909. Although it is in the manner of a pure storyless romantic ballet, Les Sylphides introduced a new genre, the ballet of mood with no narrative structure and no clearly defined characters. The leading roles were danced by Pavolva, Karsavina and Nijinsky and since that time has been performed by companies all over the world.
