    Name: Pet Preparedness Event
    Date: May 17, 2014
    Time: 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM CDT
    Event Description:

The Okaloosa-Walton Medical Reserve Corps invites pets and their owners to join together for a special day of pet-related disaster preparedness and public health activities. Join us on Saturday, May 17 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. for Pet Preparedness in the Park under the large pavilion at Liza Jackson Park in Fort Walton Beach.

This free event will include information sessions on pet first aid, dog park etiquette, healthy snacks for your pet and pet disaster preparedness. Other activities will include low-cost micro-chipping and a pet preparedness parade. Additionally, the first 15 attendees will receive an American Public Health Association "Get Ready Pup" Preparedness Calendar.

Studies have shown that many people are not willing to evacuate during a disaster without their pets. In fact, a 2007 survey conducted by the American Humane Association found that 47 percent of Americans said they would refuse rescue assistance if it meant leaving without their animals. As we enter Hurricane Season, it’s important for pet owners to make a plan and assemble an emergency kit for themselves and their pets.

The Okaloosa-Walton Medical Reserve Corps (OWMRC) is an organization of medical and non-medical volunteers who contribute their skills and expertise during public health emergencies. The OWMRC is hosted by the Florida Department of Health in Okaloosa County, and serves both Okaloosa and Walton Counties.

DOH protects, promotes and improves the health of all people in Florida through integrated state, county and community efforts.
