Sacred Heart Rehabilitation will hold an informational seminar on the management and treatment of vertigo and dizziness on Friday, Sept. 20 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Somerby Assisted Living in Santa Rosa Beach.
Leslie Moskal, Doctor of Physical Therapy, will discuss the different types of vertigo with associated dizziness, factors that increase risk, causes, prevention and home remedies that may help treat symptoms.
Vertigo is one of the most common medical complaints. It’s caused by your senses telling your brain that your body is off balance, even though it isn’t. Vertigo is a symptom of an underlying condition, not a diagnosis in itself. It can be a result of several different things. People experiencing vertigo generally describe the sensation as “feeling dizzy” or feeling as if the room is spinning. Vertigo is not the same as lightheadedness.
Dizziness is common in older adults and has diverse causes. Treatment for vertigo and dizziness focuses on the underlying cause. Some types of vertigo will only happen once, and some types will continue to recur until the underlying condition is found. Popular treatments include certain physical maneuvers and, if necessary, special medications called vestibular blocking agents.
The Sacred Heart Rehabilitation Center provides a wide spectrum of specialized rehabilitative care and education for patients that have conditions affecting their overall balance and mobility.
